It's the people I remember most. The projects always end up being beautiful, but it's the stories of those who inhabit them that add the SOUL—Janene Kraft

What I have learned from Janene Kraft…so far

  1. Cultivating such a space is not merely about physical aesthetics but about fostering an environment that serves as a nourishing cradle for your mind, body, and soul.

  2. With the right energy, you can start today, don’t be afraid; jump in. The vision, time and money will follow.

  3. There is always a certain magic - not only with Janene but with her vision. It is like a gentle, enveloping hug that grounds you amidst life's whirlwinds, lets your stress melt away, and kindles the flame of peace within you.

  4. Your space is an act of self-care, a means of weaving calm and clarity into the very fabric of your everyday life, and a silent invitation for a more focused, peaceful, and balanced existence.

  5. When my surroundings changed, I was also made a bit more whole.

  6. It takes effort, no matter what you do.

  7. Marriage is hard, harder than anyone tells you.

  8. Design isn’t about matching; it’s elements, textures, and unfolding who you are.

  9. Always remove the fruit stickers before placing them in the bowl. (one of my favorites)

  10. Show who you are, not what you are.

  11. Bonus-one we may have learned from each other - don't let others pressure you in a direction that isn't who you are.

“Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should” is a quote I first heard Janene coin in 2013 while we were standing in line at a sweet little Kirkland café. It's an ongoing wisdom-infused reminder in my life about the profound difference between possibility and usefulness. It underscores the importance of exercising discernment, restraint, and judgment, even when you have the power, gifts, and ability to do otherwise. Nice.

I had the privilege of being the pastor of Skyline Church in the San Diego, California area during a time in which we went through a massive fundraising campaign and building construction process. I turned to Janene Kraft to help us envision the project for our congregation, to help them see in the Spirit that which could not yet be seen in the natural. Her creativity was stunning. Using her exceptional vision casting skills, the congregation ‘saw it.’ They ‘got it.’

With funds raised, it came time to actually construct the building. With Janene’s touch, this became much more than an edifice made of concrete and steel. What came to be was a most innovative and inspiring church building, designed to draw the hearts of worshippers vertically to a Holy God and Caring Heavenly Father, as well as horizontally to each other. Janene left her ‘thumbprint’ all over that complex. Wherever there was a space in the building, she transformed it into a thoughtful, engaging and spiritually captivating environment. It was not merely a building. It was an experience.

Sanctuary Living a.k.a. Janene Kraft is more than just an “artist of space”— what I have always admired and appreciated (because it speaks to my own soul) her ability to create spaces that reflect who we are and allows us to be comfortable whether at work or with family. We spend a lot of time in our space so it’s important to love it, to feel it, to mean something. Janene helped me source pieces that are far more than furniture—they are like  works of art they describe who I am. These are pieces that you can’t just go to the furniture store or department store and find. It’s almost like each piece has a story if it’s own! I am so grateful that Janene was able to help me create my space…my Sanctuary!

In August of 2021, Janene challenged her readers to “find their voice.” In the middle of my own season of healing, I was struck with the thought that no matter how hard this journey gets, “finding my voice” is imperative to fulfilling my purpose. Throughout her years of consistent writing and my consistent reading, Janene never ceases to challenge me to jump into the deep waters of the refiner’s fire. That refining fire continues to burn off the debris that trips me up and has allowed the “gold” of who I am to surface. She challenges me weekly to seek first my Creator and Sanctuary Living will follow.

Janene was a divine appointment...just what i needed at just *exactly* the right time.

She is so fun to work with + was instrumental in creating a sleek design foundation that's elegant + zen. Her aesthetic, attention to detail + project management are stellar.

When i met Janene, i was embarking on a path of awakening + had just begun the intentional phase of the journey to my authentic self. As i continue to clarify, grow + evolve, so does my personal aesthetic. I was a "moving target" yet she rolled with it beautifully, which i so appreciate.

Janene understands that great design is about much more than simply filling a space with "stuff". i'm discovering my true self, awakening my dormant creativity...it's my very soul coming out to play, my essence permeating my sanctuary.

Janene holds a wonderfully safe space to explore possibility, both of design + of self. and we became friends in the process. Thanks, JK, for accompanying me on this journey!
